Our New Free Sewing and Wellbeing Group

Threads of strength is designed for women in Liverpool living with mental health

There is something quietly powerful about creating with your hands. It slows the mind, steadies the breath, and gives you a sense of focus when life has felt anything but steady.

That’s exactly why Threads of Strength has been created — a new free weekly sewing and textile wellbeing group for women in Liverpool. May being mental health awareness month, its perfect timing.

This is a space built around creativity, connection, and calm. A place where women can learn practical crafts and sewing skills while also having the chance to simply be around others in a supportive, gentle environment. Our aim is to empower ourselves and others

What is Threads of Strength?

It is a weekly two-hour stitch & support group, designed for women who may be experiencing mental health challenges, emotional hardship, or long periods of isolation who are also` long term unemployed

It is especially for women who may be living with:

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Neurodivergence (diagnosed or undiagnosed)

  • Bereavement or significant loss

  • Trauma or CPTSD

  • Extended time away from work or social spaces

  • A need for gentle routine, creativity, and connection

This is not a formal class or a high-pressure learning environment. It is a relaxed, welcoming space where you can learn at your own pace, with no expectation to perform or produce anything perfect.

What Happens in the Sessions?

Each week, participants will explore simple and accessible sewing and textile projects. These may include beginner sewing skills, upcycling, or making items for charitable causes.

You do not need any previous experience.

Everything is provided, and you are free to take part in whatever feels right for you on the day — or simply sit and observe if that feels better.

Sessions are guided by experienced tutors who understand the importance of patience, encouragement, and flexibility.

You can expect:

  • A calm, friendly environment

  • Complimentary tea and coffee

  • All materials provided

  • Gentle, step-by-step guidance

  • A group atmosphere that is supportive, not pressured

Most importantly, there is no pressure to attend every week. You are welcome to book onto the sessions that suit you, in a way that works around your life and energy.

A Space That Moves at Your Pace

We understand that energy, confidence, and emotional capacity can change from week to week. That’s why this group has been designed to be completely flexible.

Some weeks you may feel ready to sew, chat, and engage. Other weeks you may simply want to sit quietly, make something simple, and enjoy being in a shared space.

Both are completely valid here.

This is a space for rebuilding confidence gently — not rushing it.

A Personal Note

Sewing has played a deeply important role in my own journey.

Being diagnosed with ADHD, I found myself searching for something that could help quiet my mind and give me a sense of focus. Sewing became that space. It allowed me to slow down, be creative, and build something with my hands — and over time, it helped me build confidence in myself too.

What started as a way to cope gradually became something I truly loved, and eventually shaped the career I have today.

But from the very beginning, I knew I didn’t just want to sew — I wanted to teach.

I wanted to create a space where others could experience that same sense of calm, confidence, and discovery. A place where you can learn skills you didn’t know you had, feel proud of what you create, and be supported by others around you.

Because it’s never just about sewing… It’s about what happens within you while you’re doing it.

And everyone deserves the chance to experience that.

A few weeks ago and women came in to attend a class, having travelled by train from Bolton. She told me all about an amazing women’s empowerment group she attends and the profound impact it has had on her life through sewing and sisterhood.

I took this as a meaningful prompt to reflect. In conversation with one of my fellow tutors—who, like myself, had turned to sewing during a period of personal loss—we recognised a shared understanding of the role creativity can play in healing and rebuilding confidence.

From that point, it became clear that creating a space of this nature was something we felt genuinely compelled to develop and commit our time to.

How to Join

The sessions are completely free to attend.

There is no commitment required — simply choose the weeks you would like to attend.

A Small Request

One of the most powerful ways this kind of group grows is through word of mouth.

If this isn’t for you, but you know someone who might benefit — a friend, neighbour, family member, colleague, or someone quietly going through a difficult time — please feel free to share this with them.

Sometimes the people who need something like this most are the least likely to come across it themselves.

A simple share could help someone find a space where they feel less alone.

In Closing

Threads of Strength is about more than sewing.

It’s about creating a pause in the week where women can breathe a little easier, learn something practical, and be part of a group that understands the value of kindness, patience, and connection.

We look forward to welcoming anyone who feels this might be right for them.
