Sewing Myths & Facts: Let’s Talk Truths Behind the Thread

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic and quietly powerful about sewing—it connects us to creativity, patience, and self-expression. But if you've ever dipped your toe into the world of stitching, you’ve probably heard all sorts of assumptions about what sewing is or isn’t. I was recently asked to explore a few of these, and after sifting through many brilliant (and sometimes baffling) questions, I picked the top three I felt most drawn to.

Short answer: Absolutely, yes. There’s this strange notion that sewing is reserved for the “naturally crafty” or requires years of experience to even attempt. Not true. With just a few basic tools and a touch of curiosity, anyone can get started. The beauty of sewing is that it meets you where you are—you can start small, grow slowly, and enjoy every stitch along the way.

2. Is Sewing Expensive?

Here’s where I like to say: it can be, but it really doesn’t have to be. Like any hobby or skill, you can go big or keep it simple. There are affordable sewing machines, second-hand fabric options, and low-cost starter kits. The key is to start with what you have and build your collection mindfully. It’s more about resourcefulness than spending big.

3. Is Hand Sewing Inferior to Machine Sewing?

This one always makes me smile. Hand sewing carries its own charm, purpose, and precision. While machines offer speed and uniformity, hand sewing offers detail, intimacy, and control. Each method has its place, However, for me machine sewing wins (personal preference)
