DISCOVER THE RICH HERITAGE OF PATCHWORK & QUILTING
*MASTER THE HISTORIC JACOB'S LADDER TECHNIQUE IN A COMPREHENSIVE ONE-DAY WORKSHOP*
Immerse yourself in the centuries-old tradition of patchwork and quilting at the Sewing Academy's exclusive one-day workshop. Dating back to medieval times, quilting has evolved from a practical necessity to a celebrated art form, with the earliest examples found in Europe, India, and the Far East as early as the 13th century.
THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF QUILTING & PATCHWORK
The word 'quilt' – derived from the Latin 'culcita' meaning a bolster or cushion – first appeared in England during the 13th century. Throughout history, quilting has served both practical and artistic purposes:
* Medieval quilts were prized family heirlooms, often mentioned in inventories
* Quilted garments provided light, warm layers under armor for medieval soldiers
* In Britain, quilting reached its peak popularity in the 17th century among the wealthy
* Patchwork emerged as a domestic craft, allowing creative expression while practicing economy
THE JACOB'S LADDER PATTERN: A STORIED TRADITION
During our workshop, you'll create a stunning cushion using the classic Jacob's Ladder pattern, which has its own fascinating history:
* First documented in Marie Webster's 1915 book "Quilts: Their Story and How to Make Them"
* Named for the biblical story of Jacob's dream of a ladder reaching to heaven
* Also known historically as the "Underground Railroad" pattern, connecting it to America's quest for freedom
* Features a distinctive geometric design creating visual "ladders" across the fabric
* Remains one of the most enduring and beloved patterns in quilting tradition
