Beginner’s Sewing Course – Birkdale, Southport
Have you always wanted to try your hand at sewing but had no idea where to start?

Our Beginner’s Sewing Course is the perfect place to begin your creative journey. Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine before or you’re a returning sewer in need of a refresher, this friendly and sociable class will help you build confidence and learn the essential skills you’ll use time and again.
What You’ll Learn
We start right at the beginning:
~ How to thread up your machine with ease
~ The key functions and features of a sewing machine
~ Simple but useful techniques to get you sewing confidently
~ Buttonholes
~ Fabric understanding and measurements
~ Inserting a zip and pocket
~ Different seams and hems
~ Machine maintenance
~ Which presser feet and needle to use
From there, we dive straight into making! Over the weeks, you’ll complete a series of beginner-friendly projects designed to teach a wide variety of transferable skills. We will finish by creating a bespoke apron you will be very proud of. These carefully chosen projects will give you a strong foundation to continue sewing long after the course finishes.
By the end, you’ll be amazed at how much you can do with your sewing machine.

What to Bring
Your own sewing machine (if you have one – don’t worry, we can provide one if not)
A small sewing kit with the essentials: scissors, pins, clips, unpicker, etc. (We can supply these if needed)
For your final project (week four), you’ll bring along fabric of your choice. We’ll discuss this together in class so you’ll know exactly what to bring.

Patchwork & Quilting: Beginners Course 5 Weeks
Whether you're completely new to the world of quilting or you've dabbled with fabrics before, this five-week beginners course (2.5 hours per week) is the perfect place to start your patchwork journey.
Throughout this hands-on course, you’ll be introduced to the art, history, and joy of patchwork and quilting. We’ll explore traditional and modern quilting practices while guiding you step-by-step to create your very own six-block patchwork quilt—a beautiful project you’ll be proud to take home.
What You'll Learn:
~ A brief look at the history and heritage of patchwork and quilting
~ Understanding fabrics, threads, and essential terminology
~ How to cut and sew with precision, using tools like rotary cutters, cutting mats and quilting rulers
~ Introduction to block terminology and how to construct quilt blocks.
~ How to plan and arrange a quilt top with a thoughtful approach to layout and design
~ Understanding features such as sashing, cornerstones, and borders
~ The use of different presser feet required for patchwork & quilting projects.
~ Techniques including sandwiching, binding, and a foundational introduction to machine quilting
Materials & Equipment:
All equipment needed will be provided during the sessions, including tools and fabric to get you started. You’ll only need to bring your own wadding and backing fabric, which you can choose to suit your personal style.
Fancy using your own fabric for a more personalised quilt? You're most welcome to bring it along—though we’ll also have a lovely selection available to choose from.
